We found a very strong protection against the occurrence of diabetes from the Mediterranean Diet many years ago in a study called Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra (SUN) with more than 13,000 volunteers studied over the long term.
Extra virgin olive oil is the flagship of the Mediterranean Diet. And there is increasing evidence that the extra virgin category contains a series of minor components, especially phenolic compounds, which are bioactive and largely explain this protection.
In the aforementioned study, a 40% reduction in diabetes cases was also observed in those who consumed EVOO. There are many other studies that consistently show that the Mediterranean Diet rich in extra virgin olive oil prevents type 2 diabetes, which is the most common form.
